Coloring within the lines

My Thai students are happy when asked to color-in an existing drawing. They’re happy when asked to draw a line on a worksheet between, say, a word and a drawing — and they’ll meticulously use a ruler to make certain the line is straight. But, when asked to simply create a drawing (“draw an octopus”), they get edgy. Put a picture of an octopus on the board so we can copy it, they say, and are perturbed when I decline. 

When pressed, though, my students show real creative spark, like the work shown below. I especially like he Vampire Bat. That’s blood dripping from its fangs.
