Thai tongue trouble

Our students have a lot of difficulty distinguishing between L and R sounds and between Ch and Sh. Each of these sounds depends upon your tongue behaving in a certain way: touching the roof of your mouth for an L sound but not for R; parking itself against the roof of your mouth for a split second, then releasing for a Ch, and just providing a narrow hissy passage for Sh.

We use a toothbrushing set of chompers outfitted with a tongue made of red clay to illustrate proper tongue placement for our students. And we have many drills to practice with soundalike words such as clue and crew, clock and crock.
