Note that the above quote is considered by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation as a distillation of this more nuanced and cumbersome statement attributed to Jefferson: “…when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government…”  It’s clear Jefferson was not accustomed to writing for audiences with short attention spans.
