The heat doesn’t cause us to feel sorry for ourselves, but the desolation does. When we’re feeling sorry for ourselves, we think every other Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand has at least *some* sort of amenity–a stream, a mountain, the sea, some vegetation. Here, on a hot day the terrain is like a big, dirt-covered cookie sheet right out of the oven.
