Yes, it’s kind of a big deal. With last October’s death of King Bhumibol, our Thai friends seem to feel a comfortable era slipping away. King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit are the only monarchs most people have known, the King’s reign having lasted seventy years. The Queen is perhaps one of the last living embodiments of traditional Thai understanding of monarch-as-caring parent. Her birthday on 12 August is celebrated as Mother’s Day. Students make flower garlands for their moms and our most talented students perform.
